 Free-Backgrounds.com - The top resource of its kind, Free-Backgrounds.com offers loads of free, original background images for your Web site. No matter what type of look you're trying to achieve with your page, you'll find just the background you need at this new site. Backgrounds here are available in all colors and in hundreds of designs, suitable for both personal and business sites.
- Spinwave - Want faster-loading Web pages? Then check out this excellent, free online utility that can reduce the size and download times
of GIF images from anywhere on your hard drive or the Web by up to 90%. You can crunch single GIFs for free (although you'll need to subscribe to crunch whole sites). Their new "JPEGCruncher" downsizes many other types of images to JPEG format, including GIF, BMP, JPEG, TIFF and other formats.
 A+B+C Web Graphics - This site offers many original free graphics, suitable for Web pages. Categories include 3D balls, 3D bullets, arrows, banners, bar lines and small and large buttons. They'll also customize the graphics for you (limit one per visitor). They've recently greatly expanded their selection of Web page backgrounds and now offer over 8,000 images to choose from.
- GraphicsFreebies.com - This well-designed site ranks the Web's top free graphics resources by the number of votes they've received from their visitors. Each site is reviewed and the index is updated throughout the day.
- Gifart - This site offers a quality selection of several hundred free original graphics. GIF files here include buttons, icons, interfaces, wallpaper, digits, side & tiled backgrounds, 3D animations, counter digits, bullets, bars and textures. The "custom icons" section features several unusual categories, including metal mesh, fire balls, pie shapes and photos.
 Freegraphicland.com - Here's a new index of Webmaster-related sites, ranked by the number of votes they're received from visitors. Site categories here include graphics, JavaScript, CGI, CCS and HTML.
- FreeFoto.Com - A wonderful British resource, containing 4,000 free photo images from around the world. Photos here are categorized by nation and/or topic. There are many photos of a variety of scenes from Australia, Austria, Belgium, France, Italy, Singapore, Switzerland and others, as well as a large collection of images from Britain. Each photo is annotated and is in JPG format. (For noncommercial use only). Linkback required.
- CoolText: Online Logo Generator - This free service will let you easily create cool customized logos online. Just choose your text preference, your font and the colors and this service will generate your graphic quickly. Great for many uses: custom wallpaper, Web sites, etc. You can also create custom buttons and bullets here.
- Digital Blasphemy - If you're getting tired of looking at Windows' lame default wallpaper, then click over to artist Ryan Bliss' site for an awesome selection of free wallpaper art. There's over 100 eye-popping, original 3D rendered images here, including surreal images, lovely outer space scenes and abstract stuff.
- EZskins - Are you not happy with the way your desktop looks? There are hundreds of ways to modify the look and feel of your PC and this site has them all. EZskins offers loads of free desktop themes. Categories include animals, cartoons, horror, religious, sci-fi and more. You'll also find "SurferThemes" (to customize your browser's appearance), as well as ICQ skins, which let you customize the appearance of this popular chat program.
- Surfer-Net.com - Are you looking for a particular animated GIF image? This comprehensive, searchable site offers almost 30,000 free GIF images, sorted into 1,525 categories. Topics include aliens, animals, architecture, astronomy, cartoons, fantasy, flags, holidays, military, people, and more. The site is WebTV friendly.
- 1010clipart.com - This nicely designed, fast-growing new index ranks the Web's top free graphics resources by the number of votes they've received from visitors. If you have a graphics site of your own, be sure to sign up: it's a great way to build traffic.
 iqAuto 3D Graphics Generator - Here's a free online graphics generator that lets you easily create cool, custom graphics. Just type in the text you want and specify the options, which range from font texture to depth of text and within minutes, you'll be able to view your graphic. (Currently in "beta test stage," although it worked fine for us). A new feature here offers an online image editor, which allows you to crop and resize your graphics, as well as add special effects.
- The Graphic Vault - A solid collection of free, original images. Categories here include 3D graphics such as spheres, squares, rectangles, ovals and circles. There are also interfaces, bullets, arrows, backgrounds, Web sets and bars. Photoshop users will find a section that includes free filters.
- Netgfx.com - A solid new free graphics resource, Netgfx.com serves up hundreds of original images. Categories here include arrows, backgrounds, balls, bars, bullets, buttons, clipart and fonts.
- Mr. Wizard's Free Graphics - (Service is temporarily unavailable). Looking for free, custom graphics? This site offers personalized 3D graphics and animations for your site. They also can create logos and incorporate pictures into your graphics, as well as add special effects, such as glow, shadow and fire. The only thing they ask in return is that you provide a linkback to their site.
- Art for the Web - Suzanne Roman's site offers an eye-catching collection of original graphics. Here, you'll find backgrounds, buttons, 3D navigation interfaces, page templates and more. There's also a good collection of Webmaster-related links, too.
- AllFreeClipart.com - A solid free graphics resource, this site offers clipart that may be used on either personal or commercial pages. Categories include animals, arrows, bullets, cartoons, flags, music, people, sports, vehicles and more. You'll also find tips and tricks for using graphics on your site.
- ProDraw Free Graphics - Nice archive of free professionally-designed graphics, for use on personal Web pages or on your Windows desktop, etc. Images here include four broad categories: Iceberg, Sunset, Darkened and Ocean. Lots of lovely images to browse. ProDraw recently added a new 3D animations section. There's also a cartoon clips section and a good roundup of graphics software.
- A-1 Clipart Archive - A comprehensive archive that serves up over 300,000 clipart images. Includes animations, backgrounds, balls, bars, lines, icons and, of course, clipart. The site is easy to navigate and fast-loading and there's also helpful pointers to other graphics resources on the Web. Their new icons section offers over 3,000 icons in 23 categories. A new searchable, extensive database of graphics, fonts and Web resources listings has been added. If you run such a site yourself, be sure to submit it here.
- Graphics4free.com - Solid collection of various free graphics for use on your Web site. Here, you'll find over 34 pages of backgrounds, as well as 400 3D balls, 150 3D bullets, 300 arrows and 20 pages of bar lines. Other goodies include buttons, fonts, icons, space images and more. - Background City - An impressive graphics resource that offers loads of free, original background images and textures. Image categories here include embossed, rainbow, dark, starry, clouds, patterns, space, lines and more. Images here are intended for personal, non-profit use only. They may be used for free on noncommercial personal Web sites or as desktop wallpaper.
- Free Tiled Backgrounds - Background graphics maestro Tony Blalock offers over 250 free backgrounds for use on Web pages at this site. There's a wide variety to choose from and all the images are designed to tile seamlessly. Tony posts 25 new backgrounds here each week.
- FrontPage themes - Do you use Microsoft FrontPage? This site offers a number of free themes that integrate into the Frontpage Web authoring program. More free themes being added frequently.
- Set City Graphics - A treasure trove for Web page designers, Set City offers hundreds of original, free, coordinated graphics sets for your pages. Each set includes backgrounds, buttons, logos and more: all with a consistent theme. Subjects here include: Music, Country, Gem, Executive, Quilt, Designer, Genealogy, Southwest and more. Thumbnails provide a preview of each set. These graphics are free for personal home pages. A linkback is required.
- Free Kid's Clip Art - This site offers a small, but growing quality collection of free clipart for children and youth-related sites. Here, you'll find backgrounds, buttons, objects and bullets. These images are intended for use on noncommercial sites.
- webGFX: free custom logos - You can create classy, professional-looking, custom graphics (such as logos, buttons and navigation images) with this free service from Switzerland. Just click on "Log-O-Mat;" select the font and logo style that you want; and type in a text string (your custom message) and this service will create your image for you in JPG format. Another free service here, Try-O-Mat, lets you create your own custom logo style. These folks also offer complete Web sites, with 12 megs of space, a guestbook and a chat room for free. To use service, you must sign up for an account (which is free).
- GraphX Kingdom - This major free graphics resource site serves up over 3,000 images, including a nice assortment of icons. A local search engine makes it easier to find what you need. Graphics are also offered in ZIP format, for faster downloads. There's also a section on "How to Download" for newbies.
- Fractal Desktop - This is the place to go if you enjoy the fascinating world of fractals, a computer generated artform. Here, you'll find over 500 colorful free fractals. They're 640-by-480 pixels in size and are in JPG format. Ideal for use as desktop wallpaper. Artist Roberto Novegno created these images using nothing more than various freeware graphics programs, proving that you don't need to spend a lot of money on graphics software to create great art. Site was recently updated, and now includes 300 new images, as well as thumbnail previews.
- Maryam's Mystic Garden - Here's a classy free graphics site that offers original exotic Asian and African-themed buttons, lines and other images (something that we've not seen anywhere else). Images are available for all types of backgrounds. Tell Maryam we sent you.
- FreeGraphics.com - With a domain like "FreeGraphics.com," this site has a lot to live up to. And Claire Schaeffer's site delivers quite nicely: it's a well-organized, searchable database of free graphics links. Graphics include buttons, bullets, control panels, bars, sets, backgrounds, animations, and more. All sites are rated and reviewed.
- 3rd Shift GIF Animations - Here's a nice free graphics site with plenty of animations, as well as goodies to spice up your Web pages. Examples include Metallic Textures, Gold Edge Shapes, Fuzzy Shapes, Third Shift Animations, Floral Borders and more. Categories include textures for backgrounds, buttons, rules, balls, shapes and animations. There's also an "Animation of the Week."
- Clipart.com - Major free graphics site index that offers descriptions of the Web's top clipart sites. There's also a discussion forum where you can swap ideas and comments about graphics with other users. You'll also find a roundup of essential graphics freeware on the Web.
- KitGraphics - Well-done resource that offers loads of free graphics, as well as tutorials on making your own. Free images here include animations, buttons, bars, bullets and seamless backgrounds. There's also a nice selection of "page sets," (which are collections of images that are coordinated to work together well). The tutorials are helpful: here you'll learn how to do such neat tricks as create lighting effects.
- ZettWeb: Copyright-free pictures - There's over 2,000 royalty-free JPG photo images at this nicely organized site. Ideal for desktop wallpaper, as well as backgrounds. Categories include "patterns & art," "nature," "seasons," "cultural," "locations," "things around us," and "places."
- Artist for Hire - Graphics guru Bruce Stawicki's site is a fast-growing roundup of original images, suitable for using on personal Web sites. Images on tap here include textures, lines, animation, buttons, page sets, balls & bullets, interfaces and more. If you would like a custom graphic made, send in your request to Bruce: he'll make one for you in exchange for a linkback on your personal Web site.
- Free science graphics - The fascinating science site, explorezone.com, offers a small, educational collection of free science-related graphics for your Web site here. Categories include "Earth," "Space," "Weather," and "Basic Science."
- ASCII Art Gallery - Here's a graphics site with a twist: it features ASCII art only. Now, I hear you saying, "But ASCII art is boring!" Well, obviously you haven't viewed the masterpieces that Joan Stark has turned out. There's some pretty amazing stuff here, available for "personal use." Categories include: cartoon characters, animals, seasonal items, animations (!) and more.
- AniGifs by rw51 - Looking for something different in animated graphics? This site offers a small, but charming collection of original animations. They're available for free (for non-commercial use).
- freeimages.com - This is an impressive collection of free graphics on the Web. freeimages.com features all-original clipart, including backgrounds, buttons, icons, bars, and digital art. There's also a cool "Digital Images" collection that features eye-catching art in unique categories, including "Aliens & Spaceships," "Creepy Crawlies," "Frost & Fire," "Spirals," "Dark Fantasy," and more.
- Motivational Wallpaper - Are you looking for something inspirational on your computer's desktop? Check out these lovely, free desktop wallpapers from T&P SC. Images here include "Goals," "Desire," "Belief," "Evening Sky" and more. They're designed to motivate and uplift you as you work on your computer.
- Andy's Free Buttons - This is the first free graphics site we've seen devoted solely to the topic of the small graphic images called buttons. And there's a fine selection here, too. You'll find buttons suited for white backgrounds, buttons for black backgrounds and animated buttons here. There's even a bit of button trivia, to boot.
- Aviation Animation - If you're interested in animated graphics with aviation themes, this is the place to go. There's also information here on how to make your own animations.
- The Graphics Zone - Good selection of graphics and clipart that you may use on your non-commercial site, provided you give them a linkback.
Free graphics goodies here include backgrounds, icons and some classy looking page sets (a page set is a coordinated series of graphics for a page).
- Leo's Icon Archive - Here's a cool collection of useful and funny free Web graphics. Leo serves up thousands of icons, caps, lines, flags, markers and bullets (and most of them are original artworks created by Leo himself). Categories here include such topics as Mozilla icons, butterflies, welcome signs and construction signs. Newly added categories here include buttons, illustrator icons and comic icons.
- The Clipart Place - A varied, categorized collection of various free graphic images to spruce up your Web site. Here you'll find animated and static clipart, icons, bullets & balls, backgrounds, dividers and more. The "Clipart" section offers 27 categories, including graphical words and seasonal stuff. There's also a "Three Stooges" section.
